White's Cross, Leopardstown Road, Dublin 18 Mount Salem dates back to the 1830s, but the garden has only been developed over the past 25 years, when it became the home of Clare and the late Hugh Hamilton. The process has been a gradual one, starting nearest the house and finally reaching the boundary of the property with the addition of a woodland area. Although Mount Salem is situated on one of the busiest roads out of Dublin, it has become a real Rus-in Urbe. The garden extends to 0.75 acres and is divided into several parts. The small walled Courtyard Garden to the side of the house is 10 years old and is a mixture of gravel and raised beds. It is dominated by Acer griseum, a Judas tree, and a large Pittosporum tobira. To the rear of the house is a small Semi Formal Garden, which envelopes the conservatory, where the semi-circular beds are surrounded by box hedging, with Acacia melanoxylon and a Cytisus battanderia which is trained to the back wall of the house. This garden leads through to the Vegetable Garden with the greenhouse, raised beds and fruit cage. Nearest the house is a large mixed border of shrubs, shrub roses and herbaceous perennials, with the mainly Woodland Garden on the far side of the driveway. Situated:
